How To Tie A Shoe

Core method

How to tie a shoe

Cross the laces and pull one end under the other to make a starting knot. Make a loop with one lace, wrap the other lace around it in the opposite direction to your starting cross, push it through the gap, and pull both loops tight. If the finished bow lies across the shoe you have tied it correctly. If it lies along the shoe, you have tied a granny knot and it will come undone.

The standard bow, step by step

  1. Cross the right lace over the left and pull the end underneath to form a starting knot. Pull it snug.
  2. Form a loop with the left lace and pinch its base between thumb and forefinger.
  3. Wrap the right lace around that loop in the opposite direction to your starting cross.
  4. Push the wrapped lace through the gap at the base of the loop to make a second loop.
  5. Pull both loops apart until the knot seats. The finished bow should sit across the shoe, not along it.

The one test
Look at the finished bow. Loops pointing across the shoe, toward each side: correct. Loops pointing along the shoe, toward the toe and the ankle: granny knot. Keep the starting knot the same and reverse the wrap.

Why laces come undone

A shoelace bow fails for one of three reasons, in this order of frequency. First, it is a granny knot, which is asymmetric and works itself loose under the repeated shock of each footfall. Second, the laces are round or slick nylon, which does not generate enough friction to hold. Third, the tails are so long that they swing and pull the knot apart from the outside.

Fix them in that order. Reversing the bow wrap costs nothing and solves most cases. Switching to flat waxed cotton solves most of the rest. Trimming or replacing an over-long lace solves the remainder.

Faster and more secure alternatives

Once the standard bow is reliable, two upgrades are worth the practice. The Ian Knot is the fastest known method for tying an ordinary bow. Ian's Secure Knot is the most secure bow that still releases with a single pull. Both are documented in full in the knots library, along with the granny knot fix, the surgeon's knot finish and the decorative Berluti knot.

Teaching someone else

If you are teaching a child, the method matters less than the materials. Use thick flat laces in two contrasting colours, practise on a shoe that is off the foot, and break the sequence into stages taught over days rather than one sitting. The learn-to-tie library covers the bunny ears method, the around-the-tree method and the two-colour practice setup.

Common questions

What is the difference between a square knot and a granny knot?
A square knot bow has the starting knot and the bow wrapped in opposite directions, and it sits horizontally across the shoe. A granny knot has both wrapped the same way, sits diagonally along the shoe, and works loose within about an hour of walking. Reversing the direction of the bow wrap converts one into the other.
What is the fastest way to tie a shoe?
The Ian Knot. It forms both loops at once and pulls them through each other in a single motion, producing the same square-knot bow in roughly half the time. It takes around a hundred repetitions before it becomes faster than whatever you tie now.
At what age should a child be able to tie their shoes?
Most children manage a bow somewhere between four and six years old, and the range is wide enough that being outside it is not usually meaningful on its own. Thick two-colour laces and practice on a shoe that is not being worn make far more difference than the specific method taught.
Should I double knot my shoes?
A double knot holds but jams, and it can be genuinely hard to release with cold hands. Ian's Secure Knot holds at least as well and still releases with one pull on the tails, so it is the better default.
Why do round laces come undone more than flat ones?
Round laces have less surface area in contact at the knot and lower friction between strands, so the knot creeps under the repeated impact of walking. Flat waxed cotton has both more contact area and a tackier surface, which is why it holds.
